  8. 1. Apply a piece of adhesive tape to the old paint on the surface.
  9.    If the paint comes off on the tape you will need to sand the surface
  10.    down, removing all old poorly adherent coating.
  11.  
  12. 2. Clean off all dirt and grease with water and detergent then sand to
  13.    provide a key for new work. 
  14.  
  15. 3. Special primers or sealers are necessary to seal off the surface
  16.    before application of undercoat and finish. Check label directions
  17.    to ensure you are tackling the job correctly.
  18.  
  19. 4. Undercoats are used to fill and smooth out the existing surface to give
  20.    you a good base for the final coats.
  21.  
  22. 5. Before you do anything make sure the paint is stirred. Use a flat
  23.    stick and move the stirrer up and down in a scooping action.
  24.  
  25. 6. Always paint across the room and away from a light source
  26.    such as a window. As with all surfaces ensure you 'lay off' the paint
  27.    finish by going back over the surface lightly with a brush or roller to
  28.    remove any streaks and even out the surface.

  30. 7. Apply the necessary primers or undercoats as directed by the instructions on
  31.    the can for the finishing coat. Use a roller if possible, as paint will go
  32.    on five times faster than with a brush. You may need a brush around screws
  33.    and edges.

  35. 8. Avoid painting in very hot or very cold conditions and plan to finish at
  36.    least two hours before sundown, rain or dew.
